A wired hood worn by women to protect the high hairdos of the 70s/80s.
As the Frencg monarchy neared its end, ladies draped their powdered hair over
high wire cages that were sometimes taller than their heads. This kind of hairdo
most often went with the robe á la polonaise. Judging
from contemporary engravings, there really were wigs with model ships on top,
following some kind of naval event of political consequence to France.
To protect these hairdos from wind and rain, hoods were were worn whose foldable wired frames closely resembled the folding tops of open carriages, the calèches.
